Cemetery Guide

Cemetery Compliance Guide

Cemetery Regulations

New Jersey cemeteries require formal permit applications for memory bench installations. A scaled drawing showing dimensions and materials is the standard submission. Most NJ grounds enforce height limits of 36 to 42 inches from grade and minimum seat thicknesses of three inches. NJ Memorial Benches prepares all documentation and communicates directly with cemetery offices across the state. Permit review typically takes two to four weeks.

Foundation Requirements

Memory bench foundations must reach below New Jersey's frost line — approximately 36 inches in northern counties — to prevent seasonal heaving. Bench weights range from 300 to 800 pounds. NJ Memorial Benches's installation crew ensures foundations meet this standard at every placement, whether at a cemetery or in a private garden.

Religious Cemetery Considerations

NJ Memorial Benches serves Catholic, Jewish, Eastern Orthodox, and non-denominational families throughout New Jersey with equal attentiveness. Memory benches are designed to meet the requirements of each family's faith tradition and the regulations of the receiving cemetery. Russian and Polish Orthodox families regularly request Cyrillic inscriptions, which our artisans produce with the same precision applied to English lettering.

Memorial Bench

A memory bench is a granite structure — seat, pedestal or two-leg supports, optional backrest — that serves as both a memorial and a gathering place. NJ Memorial Benches memory benches range from 48 to 66 inches wide, in straight or curved seat profiles, with weights between 300 and 800 pounds. Single-pedestal designs present a formal silhouette. Two-leg designs are common in garden settings. Custom inscriptions and imagery — names, dates, verses, portraits, religious and cultural symbols — are hand-carved into polished American-made granite by our Morris County artisans. The granite memorial bench craftsmanship at NJ Memorial Benches is the product of 80+ years of practice: every letter is cut by chisel, every inscription is designed to last. Cemetery and garden installation is handled by our own crew, with all permit documentation included.

Granite Options

NJ Memorial Benches memory benches are produced in American-made granite: Jet Black, Blue Pearl, Balmoral Red, and medium gray. All inscription faces are polished to accept deep-cut lettering cleanly. Structural surfaces use sawn or thermal finishes for outdoor durability. Jet Black is the most popular choice in NJ cemetery settings; Balmoral Red suits garden memorial installations.

Custom Design Process

Design begins with a consultation at our Morris County showroom or by phone. Our team produces a scaled elevation drawing for the family's approval before any carving begins. Nothing is cut until the family has signed off on the drawing. This sequence protects the family's intentions and ensures the finished bench matches what was envisioned.

Our Process

Our Hand-Carving Process

Six stages define every memory bench commission in our Morris County workshop. Consultation: family visits our Madison showroom or calls (973) 929-9917. We collect inscription content, dimensions, granite color, and cemetery or garden site details. Design drawing: a scaled elevation is prepared and submitted for family approval before any granite is prepared. Material preparation: American-made granite is cut, polished, and inspected. Hand-carving: every element is cut by artisan hands in our Morris County workshop — no machine routing. Finishing and inspection: the piece is cleaned and reviewed against the approved drawing. Delivery and installation: our crew installs the bench statewide, at cemeteries and gardens throughout New Jersey, with foundations prepared to our standard.
